Every Artist Started out as an Amateur--Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’ve always been involved in the arts in some way. I played a little flute as a grammar school student, but then in high school I got involved in theatre. Consequently, I put my flute away for around 30 years, while always saying, “I really want to learn flute some day!” I got a B.A. in Theatre, then became a Ringling Brothers Circus clown for seven years. I returned to San Diego to become a theatre and English teacher. Along the way I got two Master’s degrees, one in Drama and one in English. Then, in the early ‘90’s, I got very sick, and realized, “If not now, when?” Taking music lessons, going back to school to learn music and performing have become some of the most enriching parts of my life.
Lately, I’ve also realized a new goal; that I want to pass on the things I have learned as an amateur to other adults who might be thinking of starting to learn an instrument. I also want to start exploring how I can advocate for more of the arts in our community. On this website, I’ve included lists of resources that can help you on your journey! I’ve also included some of the projects and ideas that I am exploring as an arts advocate, and a curriculum writer. |
