1. The article below is one I wrote for Circus Fanfare Magazine in August 2020. It gives some of my background, as well as illustrating my writing style.

2. This is research for a curriculum unit I would like to write. It is about incorporating music into an American History class in order to help teach the students about empathy in a country that increasingly seems more and more divided.
Websites
https://nafme.org/listening-diverse-voices-americas-past/ A wonderful site from the National Association for Music Education. Starts with a great quote from Pete Seeger “Little by little, we’re learning to like each other’s songs and getting less enthusiastic about killing each other.”
https://blogs.loc.gov/teachers/2014/02/songs-of-america-a-new-online-collection-from-the-library-of-congress/ Songs of America from The Library of Congress.

This website talks about Native American musical traditions in a very clear fashion.

The following unit outline uses the chapters in Jon Meacham’s and Tim McGraw’s Songs of America as its structure. This book will be a primary resource.

The following unit outline uses the chapters in Jon Meacham’s and Tim McGraw’s Songs of America as its structure. This book will be a primary resource.
Unit 1: The Sensations of Freedom
This unit, based on the first chapter of Songs of America, will include early American patriotic songs, as well as the songs of the British soldiers of the time. It will also include a section on African American spirituals, and a focus on the poet Phyllis Wheatley. The focus will be on contrasting the different communities, including the British who felt a deep sense of loyalty, the American rebels who had valid conflicts with the government, and the incoming slave population, whose feelings were disregarded by both sides.
Unit 2: Land Where Our Fathers Died
The songs and musical traditions of Native Americans will be the focus of this unit. A helpful website is in the above list. A focus might be analyzing the music in terms of stereotypes that people may have of Native Americans.
Unit 3: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory
This unit is on the music of the Civil War, including both songs of the North And South. There is also a section on the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, who performed for Queen Victoria. Finally, there is a discussion on the influx of Irish immigrants during these years during the potato famine, and the resulting prejudice.
